March is Women's History Month

March brings more than the promise of spring and celebrations like St. Patrick’s Day—it is also a time to honor and celebrate Women’s History Month. Throughout this month, we recognize the extraordinary achievements, leadership, and resilience of women who have shaped our nation and our world. It is a meaningful opportunity to teach children about the countless ways women have contributed to history, innovation, education, government, the arts, and beyond.

Women’s History Month began as a local week-long celebration in Sonoma, California, aligned with International Women’s Day. In 1980, President Jimmy Carter proclaimed a national Women’s History Week, and in 1987, following advocacy efforts, the observance was expanded to the full month of March. Since then, it has served as an annual reminder to intentionally reflect on and uplift the stories of women whose contributions have too often gone unrecognized.

Celebrating Women’s History Month is especially important as we continue striving for equity and representation. While women make up more than half of the U.S. population, they remain underrepresented in many leadership roles and fields such as STEM, and disparities like the gender pay gap persist. Recognizing these realities underscores the importance of highlighting women’s accomplishments and inspiring the next generation to pursue their dreams without limitation.

This month is also a wonderful time to honor the women in our own lives—teachers, family members, caregivers, mentors, and community leaders—who make a difference every day. By sharing their stories and acknowledging their impact, we empower young people to see what is possible and to appreciate the strength, courage, and determination of women everywhere.

World Down Syndrome Day

World Down Syndrome Day (WDSD) is a global awareness day which has been officially observed by the United Nations since 2012.

March 21st was selected to signify the uniqueness of the triplication of the 21st chromosome which causes Down Syndrome. Every year on March 21st, World Down Syndrome Day is observed to create awareness about this condition.

Together we can create a single global voice advocating for the rights, inclusion, and well-being of people with Down Syndrome in our community and around the world.

On Friday, March 20th, all students and staff are invited to wear crazy socks, brightly colored socks, long socks, short socks, printed socks, or mismatched socks to celebrate being UNIQUE!

2023 CHS Graduate, Jack Shallow, continues to sell his line of T-Shirts and other swag.

March is Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month

March is Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month, a time to raise awareness about the inclusion of people with developmental disabilities in all areas of community life, as well as awareness of the barriers that people with disabilities still sometimes face in connecting to the communities in which they live. With a greater number of students with disabilities spending a greater part of their day in the regular classroom, strategies and activities that help students better understand the needs and differences of their peers and disabilities, foster peer relationships, and help students develop empathy can have positive outcomes for all students.

Random Acts of Kindness Week Service Project

International Social Emotional Learning Day (SEL Day) is a global campaign that focuses on the importance of promoting and supporting social emotional learning in our lives. This year, SEL Day falls on March 2nd during Read Across America week. As we have fun activities planned during that week, NAS will celebrate SEL Week March 9th-13th. The theme for this year focuses on mindfulness and the importance of taking care of ourselves. Each day, students will have the opportunity to participate in various activities.

Nurse's Corner

Spring pollen counts are very high this time of year. New Albany School wants to provide you with some information on allergies and what you can do to help your student(s) both at home and while at school.

SEASONAL ALLERGY SEASON & ASTHMA FLARES
Keeping Symptoms in Check:
Symptoms of Spring allergies include:
● Sneezing ● Stuffy and/or runny nose ● Scratchy and/or sore throat ● Dry cough ● Itchy and watery eyes, gritty feeling in eyes or feelings of sand in eyes, redness, puffy eyelids, and dark circles under eyes ● Itchy, bumpy skin, redness and hives

What you can do about seasonal allergies:
When we are outside, pollen circulates through the air and lands on our bodies. It can be in our hair, skin, eyes, mouth and nose. Have your child wash their hands and face or shower and change clothes after being outside.

Treatment for Itchy, Watery, Red and Burning Eyes:
Splash eyes with water and apply wet cloth to their eyes.
Check with your child’s doctor regarding appropriate oral allergy medications and allergy eye drops.

Treatment for Itchy Skin:
The skin can respond to pollen with symptoms of small, fine bumps, itching, redness and hives. Check with your child’s doctor regarding appropriate oral and topical allergy medications.

Asthma and Seasonal Allergies Symptoms:
Check with your child’s doctor regarding treatment. Follow your Child's Asthma Action Plan for flares to ensure doses are given prior to school day when needed during flares.

Snacks can play an important role in meeting kids’ nutrient needs.
  • Choosing a variety of foods from all of the food groups will give them the energy they need between meals.
  • It helps to plan and portion out snacks in advance.
  • Kids will usually only need 2 or 3 snacks daily, and these should be provided at least one to two hours before meals.
  • It is recommended that snacks (and meals) be eaten in an area without distractions. So avoid snacking while watching TV or when using other electronic devices. Better yet, let the kids help prepare the healthy snacks.

New Jersey Nutrition Learning Resources:
The benefits of well-child visits:
  • Prevention. Your child gets scheduled immunizations to prevent illness. You also can ask your pediatrician about nutrition and safety in the home and at school.
  • Tracking growth & development. See how much your child has grown in the time since your last visit, and talk with your doctor about your child's development. You can discuss your child's milestones, social behaviors and learning.
  • Make a list of topics you want to talk about with your child's pediatrician.
  • Team approach. Regular visits create strong, trustworthy relationships among pediatrician, parent and child. The AAP recommends well-child visits as a way for pediatricians and parents to serve the needs of children. This team approach helps develop optimal physical, mental and social health health of a child.

Dental Health Month

We would like to sincerely thank Dr. Ami Gupta from Toothtown Pediatric Dentistry for creating a dental health awareness video for New Albany students. All students had the opportunity to view the video below in their classroom during morning meeting, learning about good dental health and hygeine. Consider having a discussion with your child(ren) about what they learned about dental health.

Dr. Ami recently opened Tooth Town Pediatric Dentistry, Cinnaminson's first pediatric dental practice, focused on providing compassionate, high-quality care for children in our community. To learn more about this dental office please visit Tooth Town Pediatric Dentistry.

Lost & Found

Student Arrival & Dismissal Reminders

Our # 1 priority, at all times, is the safety of our students. Arrival and Dismissal times are a busy time of day as we ensure that our 600+ students get to where they need to go.

Please take note of these important procedures:
  • We encourage parents to have your student ride the bus, as this helps alleviate the parking situation and challenging drop off along New Albany Road.
  • Anyone dropping off or picking up a student at the end of the school day MUST park on New Albany Road and walk up to the school via the footbridge or main driveway sidewalk.
  • Parents and students should remain on the sidewalk area and refrain from walking through the parking lot, as this can be unsafe with bus traffic.
  • If you are running late in the morning, parents may enter the front lot of the school to drop off their student after 9:06am.
  • As a reminder, the Covenant Presbyterian Church across from New Albany is allowing us to use their parking lot during student arrival and dismissal. We will have use of this parking lot until the snow on New Albany Road has melted and we can resume our normal procedures.
  • In order to maintain safety for all, we encourage parents to be mindful when parking on New Albany Road. Please avoid blocking our neighbors' driveways and be mindful of parking signs that may exist.
We are requesting your cooperation and assistance during this time so that each one of our students exits the school building and returns safely home or to their after-school care. Your support and partnership is appreciated.

🗣 Schoolwide Universal Expectations!

📣 New Albany Student Recognition
Good character is important for students and adults. It is shown through our thoughts, words, and actions. At New Albany, we stress respect, responsibility, and kindness by following our schoolwide expectations:

Be Respectful - I will use good manners and treat others in a way that I would like to be treated. I will be kind, express gratitude, forgive others, and help those in need.

Be Responsible - I will do what I am supposed to do and be accountable for my actions. I will try my best in all academic areas.

Be Safe - I will respect school property and make smart choices, doing my best to keep New Albany School a safe and clean place to learn.
