November is Native American Heritage Month, a time to celebrate the rich and diverse cultures, traditions, and histories and to acknowledge the important contributions of Native people.
It is also a great time to raise awareness about the unique challenges Native people have faced – both historically and in the present. Indigenous people and their cultures are not relics of the past. They are alive, breathing, and amazingly resilient.
View the Indigenous art, history, and culture as told through the historians, artists, students, and scientists in this featured resource collection on the WHYY/PBS Learning website.

Get ready for an exciting evening of creativity and problem-solving! Students and their families will collaborate on an open-ended design challenge that addresses a real-world scenario, applying their STEAM knowledge — Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math — to develop innovative solutions.
Registration for this event has reached capacity, but be sure to keep an eye on ParentSquare and Ms. Coker’s Monthly STEAM Newsletter for upcoming opportunities to participate in future STEAM events.
To access the archive of past STEAM newsletters, please click [here]. And don’t forget to check out Ms. Coker’s Monthly STEAM Challenges, where students can build a solution at home and submit it for a chance to win a prize each month!
Family STEAM Night and At-Home STEAM Challenges strengthen the connection between school and home by engaging families in creative, hands-on problem-solving that builds creative confidence and curiosity. Through this experience, students develop essential design thinking skills that they can apply to bigger opportunities—like the Invention Convention in March

World Kindness Day, celebrated globally each year on November 13, highlights the power of kindness — to others, to yourself, and to the world.
Each year, schools all over the country celebrate World Kindness Day. We encourage children to spread kindness and empower them by helping them to realize that the little choices they make every day have the power to change people’s lives, improve their own health and well-being, and ultimately change the world. We just need to choose kindness at every opportunity!
Kids can be kind by practicing simple acts like smiling, helping others, and using kind words. Other ideas include making kindness cards for neighbors, creating a "kindness jar" for family members to write down good deeds, volunteering, and helping with household chores without being asked.
At home and in the community:
-
Perform kind deeds: Help set the table, do a chore without being asked, or help a family member cook.
-
Practice kindness with siblings: Offer to play with a younger sibling or let a friend choose a game.
-
Volunteer together: Take your children to a local charity, food bank, or animal shelter to help those in need.
-
Be kind to the environment: Plant a flower or tree to show kindness to the planet.
-
Leave positive notes: Write positive messages on sticky notes and leave them for others to find.
-
Be kind to service workers: Make a point of being extra kind to cashiers or servers.
At school and with friends:
-
Give genuine compliments: Tell a friend you like their drawing or a classmate that you like their backpack.
-
Invite someone to play: If you see someone playing alone, ask them to join your game.
-
Help a friend: Help a classmate carry their books or hold the door open for someone.
-
Say thank you: A simple thank you goes a long way.
-
Be a good listener: Pay attention and listen carefully to what others are saying.
-
Create a kindness chain: Cut out paper strips and link them together to form a chain, with each link representing an act of kindness.

The New Jersey Department of Education aims to recognize educators and encourage them to become champions for education and advocates for students and teachers. When a school honors its exemplary teachers and educational services professionals, it promotes a culture that recognizes excellence, creates a sense of pride, and brings public attention to the work of outstanding educators.
Your voice counts! Please help us recognize our New Albany teachers by submitting a nomination form. You may also nominate a teacher by sending an email to Mrs. Jones at jonesv@cinnaminson.com. Please be sure to state that you are nominating a teacher for educator of the year in your correspondence.
All nominations are due to Mrs. Jones no later than Friday, November 14th.

World Kindness Day
World Kindness Day will be celebrated on Thursday, November 13th. World Kindness Day was introduced in 1998 and is observed in many countries around the world, including the United States, Canada, Australia and Japan. The purpose of the day is to promote the importance of being kind to each other, to yourself, and to the world.
New Albany staff and students will participate in discussions and classroom activities to help promote kindness in the school and our community.
Socktober Results
During the month of October, students, staff, and families participated in our Socktober donation drive. We are excited to share that we collected 1,700 socks to be donated to a local shelter for those in need. Way to go NAS families! These donations will help so many who are in need. We are so proud of this service project! Be on the lookout for our next service project, which will happen in February 2026 during Random Acts of Kindness Week.

Dear Parents and Families,
I would like to share my sincere gratitude for making our "Fall for a Great Book" Book Fair an outstanding success! The week was filled with excitement and tons of smiles!
My reward for hosting a Book Fair is watching your kids discover new books. All that joy wouldn’t be possible without volunteers from our school community – you deserve my special thanks.
Love, Mrs. Conn
Join Senator Singleton's Jump Into Reading Challenge
Students in grades K-2 are invited to participate in this year’s 9th Annual 7th Legislative District "Jump into Reading Challenge!" It is our utmost belief that the ability to become a life-long reader is one of the keys to success in education, the workplace, and beyond. Current trends in research indicate that early literacy is paramount in a child’s educational and overall development. We can collectively do our part to help students develop strong foundations of literacy and promote this life-long love of reading.
The reading challenge will take place through November 14th.
All reading logs are due back to Mrs. Conn in the library by Friday, November 14th.

Health Guidance
It's the season of colds and flu, and germs can spread quickly. We ask parents to keep their children home if they are sick to reduce the spread of germs. For detailed information, please refer to the nurse's letter: Guidelines for Illness.
Medication Paperwork
It is a board policy that a written request by parent and physician be provided to the school nurse to administer medication in school. For the safety of our students with medical needs and life threatening conditions, please ensure proper paperwork is submitted to the school nurses. If your child no longer has this condition or does not require emergency medication, please have the physician write a note stating this so your child’s health record can be updated.
Health Screenings
Screenings will be started and prioritized as a referral basis either by parent/guardian, teacher, or child study team for students with permission noted on the Annual Health Services Survey. If your child does not have permission to be screened and is referred for either difficulty seeing or hearing or another concern, it will be recommended by the nurse to follow up with your child’s medical provider. Please contact your building nurse with any questions, concerns, or referral needs.
Change of Clothing
Sometimes accidents occur and a change of clothing is needed for our preschool and kindergarten students. Please provide a change of clothes, including underwear and socks, in a ziploc bag labeled with your child's name to be kept in their backpack or storage in the classroom. It is common for elementary age students to have bathroom accidents and to ensure proper fit and limited disruption to the day, it is best to have their own change of clothes. It is also helpful to have in the event a child gets soiled during outside play (PE, recess).
The nurse's office will also accept donations of new underwear, new socks, gently used clothing, and gently used shoes.
We look forward to continuing to partner with you to ensure a healthy, happy school year! Feel free to contact us with any questions. You can reach Nurse Ormsby at ormsbyk@cinnaminson.com.

New Jersey was notified by the federal government that if the shutdown continues, November 2025 SNAP benefits will not be available on November 1.
SNAP benefits loaded on Families First EBT cards prior to October 31, 2025 will be available for use after November 1, 2025. Before going to the grocery store after November 1, we encourage SNAP food assistance recipients to check their account at NJFamiliesFirst.com or by calling 800-997-3333. If there are SNAP benefits in your NJ Families First account, they are available for SNAP benefits loaded on your Families First EBT card prior to October 31, 2025 and will be available for you to use after November 1, 2025. If there are SNAP benefits in your NJ Families First account, they are available for you to use.
Please note, you may receive eligibility notices and your MyNJHelps case summary may show that you are eligible for November benefits. Even though you may receive an eligibility notice and the benefits show in your case summary, if the federal shutdown continues, November 2025 SNAP benefits will not be posted to your Families First EBT card on time.
Because November SNAP benefits are not available as a result of a federal shutdown, fair hearings will not be scheduled for this issue.
SNAP applications and recertifications will be processed. Continue to submit requested information to ensure you get your benefits when federal SNAP funding becomes available for you to use.
For the most current information, visit www.NJSNAP.GOV or follow the Department on social media.
